For this Type 2 assignment, I had to design a movie poster using only type. Furthermore, I could only use one typeface and it had to be in black & white. The movie that I chose to do was Lars & the Real Girl. It is about a small town guy named Lars. He doesn't quite fit in with his family or other members of the community. A term to describe Lars would be anti-social. He lives alone in the garage of the house left to him and his brother. Although living next door to his brother and sister-in-law, Lars rarely spends much time with them. That is with the exception of a rare dinner inside the house. Lars is most comfortable by himself, sticking to a routine of going to work and heading straight home afterwards. While at work Lars overhears a co-worker talking about a website where you can order sex doll mannequins. Intrigued by what he hears, Lars orders a doll named Bianca. However instead of using the doll for sex, Lars treats the doll as his real-life girlfriend. Discovering this his family and the whole community are involved with how to handle this unusual situation.
Here is my initial response on how I planned on creating a visual parallel between the movie and my design of the poster: "Lars and the Real Girl at first seems like it is about a strange topic, but underneath the unusual topic lies a different story. In order to create a visual parallel I think the type needs to have some subtlety to it. When looked at one way it may have a certain feel, but when viewed again you could see the underlying tone or message. I believe the title should have a serious look to it, but it could also have some slight playfulness to it. It might be worthwhile to have contrast between Lars and the Real Girl because one is real while the other is fake."
